If we could change the world, here's what we would do

Simon, Kieran & Tom
St Mary's, North Sydney
New South Wales, Australia

Simon: Firstly I’d aim to become a leader. Possibly a prime minister or president, and that way I’d try to stop war by taking all of the arms from everyone I can find with a gun, bombs, pistols, missiles, and close down all weapon shops, even if they have a license. Even hunters would have to give up their guns. They’d have to use either a knife or possibly a taser if they could afford one. There would also be a reward given to everyone who finds a gun, even if it’s theirs, their friends, or was found on the floor. The reward would possibly be a $5000 reward.

Kieren: Well, no I don’t agree, Simon. Primarily it would be impossible to remove as many firearms that would make the world a better place in one or even several lifetimes. Personally I would establish an organization dedicated to world tranquility like United Nations, but with more power and firstly we would take action on several countries like Burma, who are under military rule and are not letting us in to help them in their need after the devastating cyclone.

Simon: Why, that’s a great idea Kieren

Tom: I would personally start like Simon would, get rid of all firearms and violent weapons, but I would not give a large reward otherwise my government would go broke, when the money should be spent on other matters, which for now I won’t go into. But also Simon you have a good point, but it will be hard to get people to give up their firearms and if you did where and what would you do with them?

Simon: Well Tom, I would incinerate all the firearms and establish a factory making not killing or wounding weapons like tasers.

Kieren: Firstly Tom and Simon, if you did manage to get rid of all weapons, the country would be left defenseless against terrorist attacks, including bombings and the country would no longer be able to protect itself or send armed help to countries in war and need. In reality as long as someone else in the world has an army, we must have an army and stopping war is about demolishing military rule in all countries of the world and establishing a fair parliament without corruption and only then can war begin to stop and to do this no-one yet has thought of, without mass destruction and war.

Tom: Now, don’t forget this isn’t just about war throughout countries; this is also about how everyone should be treated equally in all countries of the world and aid sent to countries in need of help. Also if all people are treated equally it will help to eliminate poverty and injustice.

Simon: Also, we must not forget that the world has many more problems that we are causing like global warming and we are slowly making many species of animal extinct and many of our world resources like oil.

Kieren: You’re right Tom, injustice and inequality is lacking in many places and peoples rights are at a low in countries especially in Africa. To try and help to give all people rights, we can only begin by donating to charities, so that they or even we can go and build schools and churches where they teach children and families that they all have rights and need to stand up to tyrants.

Tom: There is also a case of killing off near extinct animals. If we don’t cut down on the amount of resources we use these days, the majority of the animals we see around us, could in a few decades be rare and many extinct. Currently there are 5000 species of animals and more than 25000 species of plants facing extinction. For example timber is a main resource used these days and more trees are being cut down and destroying habitat and already our countries native animals are becoming endangered.

Kieren: Also as there are so many people out in the world looking for a way to make money, many people have found that way in mining and logging resources. Too many some might say. Currently our oil, iron and other metals will not last us another century at this rate. We must all try to cut back on our usage of fossil fuels and try to minimize our water usage as our country is in a devastating drought and we must all pull together to make the world as we know it last.

Kieren, Simon, Tom: And that is what we would do if we could change the world for the better.
