How to protect our planet

Our planet is special. In order to live in a clean planet, we must protect it. The environment is everything that is around us, especially the air, sea, plants and animals. It is very important that we take care of the environment.

Trees must not be cut down because they provide shade, shelter and food for animals. And if a lot of them are cut down, some animals will become extinct. The orangutans that live in the tropical rainforests of Borneo and Sumatra have been moved into a reserve to protect them because the trees they used to live in have been cut down and used for timber. Trees should not be cut down because they give us oxygen to breathe. When trees are cut down, more should be planted.

Water bodies have been polluted in many ways. Waste from factories is often put into the water. Pesticides from farms make their way into water bodies and that pollutes our water. To put a stop to this, we must encourage farmers to use organic pesticides and also encourage factories to research into cleaner ways of disposing of their industrial waste. Governments should fine companies that pollute water bodies with industrial waste. Smoke from factories evaporates into the sky and this pollutes the atmosphere.

The ozone layer is the layer around the Earth, which protects us from the harmful rays of the sun. The ozone layer has slowly developed a hole and this means that more direct sunlight gets into the Earth's atmosphere. This means that we can burn more easily. Some chemicals that are used in manufacturing have a bad effect on the ozone layer. Governments should make sure that manufactures use ozone friendly chemicals, as they are not bad for the ozone layer.

A dirty environment can result in the spread of diseases like malaria. We should not throw rubbish into gutters and rivers. It is important for governments to develop a waste management policy, so that there are specific areas where we can put our refuse.

Also, in Ghana, people sometimes urinate and defecate on seashores. This ruins the beaches. It is important for governments and private companies to build public toilets.

Protecting our planet is what we need to do. We have to live responsibly and not take part in activities that pollute our planet. A dirty environment is bad, so we must remember to help keep our planet clean.
