Save our Earth and save our lives

We often hear the phase 'Save the Earth'. But I don't think we are in any danger. The Earth has lasted for over four million years and has survived a number of calamities and dangers. Our Earth will live on and life on it will not perish for at least another million years.

But this doesn't mean that we can sit back and relax. This is the time when we can try our level best to try and improve our living conditions and also save our planet. We need to do something if we are to save it from another four million years of suffering, misery and extinction. There are a number of ways we can contribute and do our bit to save the world. This isn't a self-righteous stance or another of those unending speeches; it is just a plea to save our planet.

Global warming is a major problem, which all of us are facing today. It is the gradual warming of the Earth's atmosphere and oceans, which is reportedly caused by the burning of fossil fuels and the use of other industrial pollutants. Models referred to by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change predict that global temperatures may increase by 1.4 to 5.8 °C (2.5 to 10.5 °F) between 1990 and 2100. An increase in global temperatures can, in turn, cause other changes, such as the rising of sea levels and changes in the amount and pattern of precipitation. These changes may increase the frequency and intensity of extreme weather events, such as floods, droughts, heat waves, hurricanes, and tornadoes. Other consequences include higher or lower agricultural yields, glacier retreat, reduced summer stream flows, species extinctions and an increase in the ranges of disease. If we do not curb global warming now, then we are putting ourselves in grave danger. Modern technology can make our cars and trucks go further on a gallon of gas. It's the biggest single step we can take to curb global warming .We can also use solar and wind energy rather than burning coal and polluting the environment. Using well-tuned cars can also help.

Another major problem is the cutting down of trees. Humans are ruthlessly cutting down trees. Today, instead of seeing a clean, green and healthy environment, all we can see is a concrete jungle, which is expanding day by day. Deforestation is, of course, providing a place for humans to live but, at the same time, it is taking away the natural habitat of a number of animals. Because of this, a large variety of species is becoming extinct. A reason for deforestation is overpopulation. If the increasing population is controlled right now, then we can save many species of animals and plants.

There are other small ways to help, such as conserving electricity and saving water. Such steps can help make this world a better place to be. So let's all of us pledge to do our bit everyday to save our planet and to save our lives. Start right now!
