Our Mother Earth is in danger! We must do something to save her!
Maharaja Man Singh Vidyalaya
India
These are the words which all of us repeat at least once everyday, but how many of us actually do something to save this Earth? Our Earth is the most unique planet in the solar system. It is the only planet where life exists, and we, who are the most intelligent creatures on this Earth, do not understand its importance.
The natural resources of the Earth are being depleted at an alarming rate. It is said that they will all be exhausted by 2020. How many of us are aware of the hard facts like:
- If you throw away two aluminum cans, you waste more energy than 1,000,000,000 (one billion) of the world's poorest people use a day.
- Making a new can from scratch uses the energy equal to half a can of gasoline.
- More than 1,000,000,000 (one billion) trees are used to make disposable nappies every year.
- In one minute, 50 acres of rainforest are destroyed.
- The increase in pollution is resulting in acid rain.
- Air conditioning uses 10 times more energy than a fan. It therefore creates 10 times the pollutants.
- Cars and pick-up trucks are responsible for about 20% of the carbon dioxide released into the air.
- There are about 500 million automobiles on the planet, burning an average of two gallons of fuel a day. Each gallon releases 20 pounds of carbon dioxide into the air.
- About 80% of our trash goes to landfills, 10% is incinerated and 10% is recycled.
- Since there is little oxygen underground, where we bury our garbage, almost nothing happens to it, as the bacteria can't live there to help it decompose. Scientists have dug into landfills and found ears of corn still intact after 20 years, and newspapers still readable after 30.
- The average person makes about 3.5 pounds of trash a day.
- In a year, the average person uses as much wood in the form of paper as the average resident of the developing world burns as fuel.
Aren't these facts shocking! Do we realise that we are destroying our own Mother Earth and, in turn, bringing human life to an end! It is in our hands to take small steps and save this beautiful Earth of ours. Here are some ways to make a difference:
- Turn off lights and other electric things, like TVs, stereos, and radios when they are not in use.
- Use rechargeable batteries.
- Do things manually instead of electrically.
- Use fans instead of air conditioners.
- In winter, wear a sweater instead of turning up your thermostat.
- Whenever possible, use a bus or subway, or ride your bike or walk.
- Don't waste products made from forest materials.
- Use recycled paper and recycle it. Reuse old papers.
- Don't buy products that may have been made at the expense of the rainforest.
- Plant trees, especially if you have cut one down.
- Get other people to help you in your cause. Make and/or join an organisation that helps to protect our environment.
- Avoid products that are only used once and then thrown away.
- Encourage your grocery store to sell environmentally friendly cloth bags for people to use when they shop, or bring your own.
So, friends, it is up to us to join hands and become one. We are the ones who can bring about a change and save this beautiful Earth.
