An interview with our school's environmental leaders

Ellen, Rachael & Alexandra
St Mary's Primary School
Australia

At St Mary's Primary School we have two environment leaders, Lauren and Tom, both of whom are in year six. Year five students Rachael, Ellen and Alexandra have interviewed them about their important role in our school.

Alexandra: How did you gain this role?
Environment leaders: We wrote a letter to Mrs. De Bono, our Principal.

Ellen: What do you do as environment leaders?
Environment leaders: We take out the garbage bins so they can be collected and we sort out the things that need to be recycled, we also make people aware of the amount of rubbish we collect each week. We also make sure that there are tubs at the bubblers (drinking water fountains) to collect run off. This is used to water the gardens.

Rachel: What great ideas have you come up with this year?
Environment leaders: We came up with the gardening club where students get to look after the school gardens themselves by watering, weeding and helping to grow herbs.

Alexandra: Is there a reason why you went for this role?
Environment leaders: We wanted to try something new for the school this year. Everyone is aware of recycling so we knew it would not be hard to encourage people to keep using the recycling tubs in each classroom.

Rachel: Do you get time out of class to do your job?
Environment leaders: Yes, we do get time out of class but we make sure we catch up on our work.

Alexandra: last year St Mary's Primary had a 'scrap' day. What happened?
Environment leaders: There were four groups: paper, garbage, electricity and drains, and we all cleaned up these areas. Knowing the sorts of areas that need attention helps us understand more easily where rubbish comes from and ends up.

Comment: We think if we were environment leaders we would try to get a compost bin or a worm farm and maybe even some water tanks to collect water run off from the roof so that we could do even more for the environment.
