Global poverty presentations
Horizons Learning Center
Thailand
The students of Horizons Learning Center in Phuket, Thailand invite you to look at our presentations for the conference. We discussed the concept of poverty and how it affects people, both the poor and not-poor. We had a presentation from a woman who runs an orphanage in Mongolia, and learned how the overall concept of ‘how poor is poor’ really depends on where you are. We had another presentation by a long-term resident and land developer in Phuket about how the situation of the island's poor has changed over the 20 years he's lived here. Some of the students visited and interviewed construction site workers on the island, others went to interview the elders of an impoverished and struggling family living behind a Chinese temple near our school. Most of our students are survivors of the 2005 tsunami, and reflected on their experiences of both the event and the aftermath. All in all, we've had a lot to think about and explore! Our presentations show the different aspects of poverty, as explored by three different groups of students: the history of poverty, viewpoints on poverty, and a challenge to the stereotype of 'poor = unhappy'. Another group also made an introduction to our unusual, very small (14 students!) school. The students themselves handled all aspects of videotaping, video editing and PowerPoint creation. We are glad to be able to share our viewpoints with you, and hope to hear/see yours!
