Global peace: An impossible dream?

There is too much violence and destruction in the world. Peace is unachievable under these circumstances.

The Buddhist point of view

Many Buddhists believe that world peace can only be achieved if we first establish peace within our minds. The idea is that anger and other negative states of mind are the cause of wars and fighting. They believe we can live in peace and harmony only if we abandon the anger in our minds and learn to love each other.

In my opinion, world peace can't be achieved and it is a waste of time to even try. What we all should do is try to focus on our own problems and, in turn, that will take care of the rest of the world's problems.

People are going around trying to achieve peace in all the wrong ways. People are trying to 'win' in all the fighting that is happening. What they do is go in and bomb everything and hope that that was the right thing to do and they think that this will achieve world peace. Fighting in this way will not achieve world peace. All it's going to do is cause more hurt and pain and anger, which is not the way to world peace.

The war in Iraq is no way to achieve peace. The Americans have gone in and told all the Iraqis that they should do exactly as they say or they will bomb them. The Iraqis don't want to do what the Americans tell them to do. Why should they do what the enemy wants? After all, wasn't it the Americans who came into Iraq and started to bomb all the innocent civilians? At the moment at least one thousand innocent people are being killed in Iraq everyday.

Everyone is saying that we should all be peaceful and they try to rush it all along. What we should do is slow it all down. Don't try to rush things. We must take care of our problems and I believe that the rest of the world's problems will take care of themselves. Only after we have taken care of our problems will the other problems hopefully dissolve away into nothing.

I hope now that you have been educated and now you know that world peace can never really work unless we respect other people's decisions.
