Global peace

I have a friend in this world whose name is Peace. He is dressed in white robes. He has not seen the ugly face of the world.

In the contemporary world, no one lives peacefully. Every country impinges upon the rights of others. If a third world war occurs, there would be no sign of civilisation left. This precious civilisation that we have now is the result of millions of years of evolution. It is said: 'Restless person is always without peace; anger, antagonism and hatred tried him to cease.'

Today there is a scramble for not only the limited resources on Earth but also for the other planets. 'It is heaven upon Earth, to have a man's mind move in charity, rest in providence, and turn upon the poles of truth,' said Francis Bacon. It is the nature of humans to love and believe. If these needs are not respected then there will be a threat to global peace. If humankind's power is active, progressive and defensive, then we are the 'doer', the creator, the discoverer and the defender. Our power is not just for ruling or battle. Our intellect and progressive view can make this Earth into a paradise.

But now the question arises, 'How can this peace be attained?' It is important that we recognise that there are many hurdles in the path of peace. Some powerful nations appear to be actively planning to work against the nations, which are not capable of protecting themselves. A war is no longer only for land but for ideals, religion, thoughts, or the supremacy of one nation over others.

We see nowadays, however, that progress in transportation and communication has brought all the people of the world into close contact with one another. We have all become members of a global family. For the survival of this family there is a need for religious help. The religions of the world should take the responsibility for building world peace. This requires mutual cooperation among the world's religions, races and nations to build a harmonious family of humankind. Humanity would replace hatred, violence and war.

As we know, 'Peace cannot be kept by force it can only be achieved by understanding.' As everything has its cost, so too does peace. As was said by Benjamin Franklin, 'Peace may be purchased at too high a price.' We need to achieve a unifying global peace as the basis for a humane and ecologically viable global system. New political, social and economic arrangements and a new vision of human existential reality and purpose need to be devised. This is an agenda worthy of our best endeavours.

For the sake of peace, several countries have sacrificed their existence and merged with bigger countries. Our goal must not be peace in our time, but peace for all time. Where there is no peace there is no limit to our sufferings.

'War is peace, freedom is slavery, ignorance is strength,' said George Orwell. This saying has a deep meaning. No one can enjoy peace until he sees the consequences and ugly face of war, which leave the world groaning and writhing with lots of suffering. Freedom can only be enjoyed by a person, who has been a slave or bonded. Ignorance becomes strength when it is realised by someone else.

Countries are trying to accumulate their war power by hoarding arms, ammunitions, missiles and hydrogen bombs. Everyone is scared of the other but actually we are afraid of ourselves, our nature, and our passion. Secular education should be widely given to achieve the goal of global peace. I would like to conclude that the word peace sounds good but it needs a lot of sacrifices by each and every individual if it is to be achieved.
