Can we ever bring peace to our planet Earth?

Before I discuss this topic, we first have to know the meaning of the words 'global peace'. Global peace means the end of conflict, wars and riots. But, this doesn't mean that peace is just the 'absence of war'. It also must mean 'the presence of justice'.

We need peace, or else we cannot live. With so many wars and riots going on, millions of people have already lost their lives. There has also been a lot of damage to the environment and many homes and roads and railways have been destroyed. If the wars and riots keep going on, it will be really hard to live on planet Earth. And without Earth we will be in a lot of trouble, as human beings cannot exist anywhere else in the universe.

If World War Three takes place, our planet will surely be destroyed, because these days, many countries have advanced weapons like nuclear bombs. These sort of weapons can cause a lot of destruction to the environment and nuclear weapons could even destroy the Earth completely.

But why are wars taking place? Why can't all of the countries of the world just agree on peace instead? The answer could be that some countries want more land, or it could be that some countries want more resources, like fuel, gold, and minerals. In order to get these they fight other countries. Wars also occur because of religion. There are many other reasons for countries going to war.

Riots also happen because of different reasons. There may be riots because of poverty and hunger. Riots cause destruction to infrastructure and buildings and sometimes many people also die.

Wars are still happening now. The wars happening nowadays include the war between the US and Iraq. There are about 30 wars happening at the moment. Can you imagine about 30 places where there are guns being fired, bombs exploding, people dying, and the sounds of BOOM, BAM happening? It would be so horrible. Much more horrible than the past, because in the past, there were only arrows, small guns and a few cannons used in fighting. Today there are atom bombs, machine guns, rocket launchers and AKs, which are a type of a gun. These are more advanced weapons and they cause much more damage.

Are there certain groups that work towards bringing peace to the world? Yes, there is the United Nations and also many other groups. But the real question is, can they bring peace to our planet? Well, let's first look at the aims of the United Nations. Its aims are to prevent wars, to safeguard human rights, to provide a mechanism for international laws, and to promote social and economic progress. This group was formed at the end of the Second World War. I don't think they can achieve peace, because I don't think they can persuade or force every country to stop fighting. Forcing a country to stop fighting would not be a good idea anyway.

If international organisations cannot bring peace, who could bring peace to our planet? We can. But how? I think we should respect and love each other. We also need to value friendship and learn how to compromise. All of these things as well as justice, truth and non-violence are very important if we are to achieve peace.
