Imagining global peace

Global peace is a serious issue in today's modern world. Do we live in a peaceful world? With all the global conflicts occurring and the environmental issues, you may think that we don't. However, we are in fact living in the most peaceful time in the history of humankind. According to an article in Reader's Digest (December 2005) it is the 'best time to be alive' and 'we live in the freest, healthiest, most peaceful, longest-lived era in human history'.
This doesn't mean everything in the world is perfect and happy. There are still wars, terrorist attacks, and many other global issues. If you list all of these issues, they all linked to one common topic: politics.
One of the main reasons there isn't global peace is because of how governments work. Because they have so much power over the country and speak for the people, everybody in the country is affected. People, in other countries as well, may not like the decision of their own government, or a different government, and will rebel or protest against the decision to get what they want. A possible outcome of this is war between two countries. To solve this issue, we could have only one government for the whole world, which consists of all the politicians of all the countries, or have a government that is actually run by the people of the country instead of having presidents or prime ministers. Also, if all politicians in the world make an organisation, there will be more peace between the politicians. This would mean that there would be more peace between the people on Earth.
Another reason that there isn't global peace is that we don't respect one another. We should treat each other as equals, no matter how different we are from one another. Instead, there is segregation between all the people of the human race. Whether it is colour, gender, or ethnic background, many humans still have to say that they are better than other people because of these reasons. It is very foolish that we discriminate against other people. If we all treat each other equally, we will work towards creating more friendships and a better, more peaceful world.
When we talk about global peace, we don't only mean the human race, but we also talk about our environment and the animals that also inhabit this world with us. We are the only species on Earth that can protect the other species of the Earth. If we kill all the plants and animals, it disturbs and destroys the circle of life.
They depend on us and we depend on them. If we continue to pollute our Earth, it contributes to global warming and will ultimately lead to the destruction of all the inhabitants on Earth. This isn't a very good way to work towards global peace. We use a lot of resources that the Earth provides us with. We sometimes waste them and harm the environment. If we use up all the resources, there probably won't be any more for millions of years. A way to solve these problems would be to find other unlimited resources to use for our needs that don't harm the environment, such as solar energy. We should also study plants and animals more to help preserve them. We must work together to preserve our environment. Even if you just plant one tree, it will make a difference.
We are the generation of today. The fate of the world rests in our hands. It's up to us to help keep our Earth clean, beautiful and peaceful. We cannot do this alone. It takes the effort of every single human being to accomplish this task. To work towards global peace, we need to have better governments, treat others equally, and conserve the environment. We can also encourage other groups like Oxfam to increase global peace awareness. If we don't act now, we never will. Global peace is vital for everyone on Earth. If we all follow the powerful words of the song by John Lennon, global peace won't be so hard to achieve.
Imagine
(by John Lennon)
Imagine there's no heaven,
It's easy if you try,
No hell below us,
Above us only sky,
Imagine all the people,
Living for today...
Imagine there's no countries,
It isn't hard to do,
Nothing to kill or die for,
No religion too,
Imagine all the people
Living life in peace...
Imagine no possessions,
I wonder if you can.
No need for greed or hunger,
A brotherhood of man,
Imagine all the people
Sharing all the world...
You may say I'm a dreamer,
But I'm not the only one,
I hope someday you'll join us,
And the world will live as one.'
