Two poems: Peace and war
Princes Hill Primary School
Australia
Peace
The bright gold sun shone
As a small boy ran along,
His bare tanned feet
Relishing the soft green grass.
Following behind
Was an excited brown dog.
Yapping and squealing,
The small dog leaped around.
The boy and the dog
Began to make their way down
To the foreshore, where
Gold, sandy coves lay at the edges
Of fields of poppies.
The sparkly blue green ocean
Shimmered and danced
In the calm peacefulness
Of the morning glow.
War
The small, frightened boy sprinted
In and amongst the
Giant, dull grey trenches.
In his tiny arms
Lay a brown dog: a victim,
Killed by gunshot.
The sky was grey and lifeless,
The sea was choppy.
Dull white sand filled the coves.
The only colour
Was red, brilliant red, dark red,
The red of poppies
That swam amongst the trenches.
Graceful, beautiful,
Compared to the blood red
That boldly stood out in this horrid war scene.
