Global peace: My plan

The problem

Earth is a planet wracked by warfare and differences. As much as we like to think of Earth as a fairly peaceful planet, there is always some sort of conflict occurring somewhere, both internally and between nations. Simply saying 'Stop it and let's work together' isn't going to work anytime soon. The United Nations, although good in principle, is lacking in some areas. Therefore, I have drafted a plan of my own.

My solution: a world body called the 'Earth Government'

Although it could be argued I am simply trying to recreate the United Nations, I am not. I am suggesting something completely different. This world body will be in total control. It will be in charge of everything and not just have representatives from countries.

For example, there will be no American Defence Force, Australian Defence Force, or Iranian Defence Force. There will just be the Earth Defence Force. Equally, there will be Earth Air Lines, instead of Qantas and Aeroflot and the various other airline carriers of today.

Key figures: the Earth Leader

The Earth Leader will be elected every four years. The Earth Leader will be elected through the following process:

The Earth will be split into different 'electoral regions', as shown by the accompanying map. Regions surrounded by red and/or with 'vote' written in them, will be given the chance to vote for the region they wish to join. This would mean that Turkey, Russia, Greenland, Iceland and the islands of the Indian Ocean would choose which region they wanted to belong to. Each country in each region would put two representatives up. The country then votes on the two and the winner goes through to the next round. The representatives from each country are then voted on by the entire region. The winner goes through to the next round. In the final round, there are eight final representatives. The entire world votes on these and the winner of this vote becomes the Earth Leader.

Vice Earth Leader

The Vice Earth Leader would be chosen from a new vote by the world. The final seven from each region (excluding the new Earth Leader) would be the candidates. This way would ensure that there are always two leaders from two different regions.

Earth Defence Force Leader

The Earth Defence Force Leader would be elected solely by the military. Each region would put forward a candidate from their existing militaries. Only soldiers would be able to vote for this leader. The military's job would be to assist with disaster relief, reinforce the police if necessary and help with reconstruction efforts rather than fight other countries.

Policies

It would not be immediately compulsory for nations to join the new world body. However, those that do not join may soon get left behind as other nations in the world move forward. One condition of entry to this system would be that the countries' own leaders must be democratically elected in regular elections.

There would also be a policy of free trade between all member nations. This means that there would be no import or export fees or tariffs, but nations could only ship in as much as they need to have. This would mean that developing nations could ship in hundreds of tonnes of food and supplies in order to help feed their people and construct new and better facilities. But they could only order in as much as they need so that other countries can still order in what they need.

Military hardware would be an exception and would attract import fees, as it would not be good to promote rapid military growth through the free importation of weapons.

As we are all humans, we are of the same race. We only look different. Asian people look different to white people, who, in turn, look different to Middle Eastern people and so on. In the new world government, looks would not matter. The world has advanced far beyond petty beliefs that one particular race is superior to another. If something happens to one country, all countries that can afford to would be required to respond in some way. This may include sending troops to help keep order, sending supplies or sending medical teams. This would ensure that we look after everyone. Countries that are still developing would be exempt from sending immediate aid until they are judged to be ready.

Countries and organisations that can afford to should work together for the greater good of all. This means that Russia, America, China, and the European Space Agency should all work together in the area of space flight to minimise costs to one country and deliver greater benefits for all. Countries should also work together in the area of humanitarian relief for those that need it most.

Conclusion

Under my plan, all countries would be under one command, and would all be treated equally. All resources would be distributed for all to use. This would mean that no countries would have a reason to fight others. This would be the best way of achieving global peace.
