'Sadako' - a story of peace
St Mary's School
Australia
In year 3 we have been reading an excellent story called 'Sadako' by Eleanor Coerr. It's about the dropping of the atom bomb on Hiroshima, Japan on the 6th August, 1945.
This story tells about a girl who suffers from leukemia or radiation sickness. She tries so hard to make one thousand origami paper cranes, so that her wish to live and be well again will come true. Sadly, however, she dies but her classmates make the final cranes for her. In all, one thousand paper cranes were buried with Sadako.
Each year in Japan there is a special Peace Day, when people visit the Peace Park to remember all the people who died because of the atom bomb.
Our student teacher told us all about this special day and also made a find-a-word puzzle which contains lots and lots of words about peace.
We highly recommend that all children of the world read this book because it helps us to learn about the effects of war and how innocent children can suffer.
The message of Sadako is that we should make peace for the world.
