We're all in it together
Australia
To take away our borders and live as a global community would eradicate many problems that are the basis for chaos in today’s world. In theory, what a great idea it would be; to live in harmony, to live without the fear of nationalist border wars, to live as equals. However, there will always be the undeniable question of power. Who would have the power of this land mass that we would call home? Would the leaders of today be willing to forfeit their power to live as global citizens? How far would people go for more power?
In practise, I cannot envisage how eliminating borders would create a peaceful society. I cannot see every citizen agreeing on a suitable government to run this global society. If a democratic vote took place, would the losers then accept their defeat and back down? Would the people accept the government’s decisions or would they revolt?
Unfortunately, merely removing borders will not remove the need of some people to try and get what they want by using violence. I do not believe that war and violence are a part of human nature. Throughout history, however, it has been repeatedly proven to be the downfall of humankind. With the eradication of borders needs to come the learning and understanding that we are all one and equal. We’re all in it together. As corny and unrealistic as it may seem, we need to help each other out. Removing the physical borders is one step, however it will be removing the mental barriers between religions, ideologies and people that will ultimately be of most assistance in creating peace in our world.
